Indian National Youth Festival 2012 at Mangalore

The Seventeenth National Youth Festival will be held in Mangalore from 12th to 16th January, 2012. The festival will be inaugurated by Shri D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Chief Minister of Karnataka on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Mangala Stadium. Shri M. Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Corporate Affairs will be the Chief Guest while Shri Ajay Maken, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, and Shri Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, Dharmasthala will be the “Guests of Honour”. Shri Maken will give away the National Youth Awards to 28 individuals and 2 organisations at the inaugural function. This is the first time that the Festival is being organised in Karnataka.

The theme of this year’s event will be “Celebrating Diversity in Unity”. As many as 5000 young persons from all States and UTs are expected to participate in the Youth Festival. Apart from that, young delegates from SAARC countries will also participate in the festival thereby giving it truly “diversified” character.

During the five-day festival, there will be competitive events in 16 individual items and 2 group items. In addition to this, non-competitive events namely Yuva Kriti, Food Festival, Young Artists’ Camp and Adventure Park will be organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan which works under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The National Service Scheme will organise a Youth Convention and a lecture series ‘Suvichaar’.

The Festival will be concluded with a Valedictory Function at Mangala Stadium on 16th January, 2012 which is to be presided by Dr. H.R. Bhardwaj, Governor of Karnataka. Shri Sadananda Gowda will distribute the prizes on the occasion while Shri Maken will be the Chief Guest and deliver the valedictory speech. Shri D.H. Shankar Murthy, Chairman, Karnataka Legislative Council, will be the Guest of Honour.

National Youth Festival, since its inception and first successful organisation in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) in 1995, is organised every year from 12th to 16th January across different States of the country to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekanand which falls on 12th January. New Delhi, 23 November 2011: The 42nd International Film Festival of India which will be held in Goa from 23rd November to 3rd December 2011. Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais, was named the runner-up and Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez secured the second runner-up position.

Indian Panorama IFFI 2011: List of selected films

Trivandrum, 18 October 2011: The IFFI jury for selection of feature films has announced the names of the movies selected in the Indian Panorama for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2011.

Out of the 24 feature films selected 7 of them were Malayalam films. Malayalam films has the most number of entries in the panorama followed by Hindi, Bengali and Marathi films which has a representation of 3 each. One movie each from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada languages has also been selected. Malayalam film Urumi has been chosen as the Opening film of the Indian Panorama 2011.

In the non-feature section 21 films were also announced. The jury for Feature films was headed by renowned filmmaker Ms. Sai Paranjpye.

Kochi Tuskers Kerala suspended from the IPL

New Delhi 19 September 2011: BCCI has handed over suspension notice to the one year old IPL franchisee Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The consortium behind the IPL team has defaulted the annual bank guarantee of Rs. 156 crores due to the BCCI.

Despite several reminders from the BCCI the team was unable to pay the dues.

According to the suspension notice BCCI has asked the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchisee to pay the amount within a particular period or else the team will be terminted from the IPL next seasons.

RBI raises repo rate by 25 bps to 8.25%

Hyderabad, 16 September 2011: Reserve Bank of India has hiked the benchmark interest rates by 0.25% to combat inflation.

The Bank has not changed the cash reserve ratio (CRR).

The repo rate now stands at 8.25%, while the reserve repo gets adjusted to 7.25%. The CRR remains unchanged at 6%.

New Delhi, 13 September 2011: Hindi Diwas will be observed all over the country tomorrow (14th September).

It was on this day in 1949, Hindi was awarded the status of Official Language of India. To commemorate the historic occasion, Hindi Diwas is observed every year on 14th September.

The celebration of Hindi Diwas is marked by awarding of prizes for excellence in various fields viz. implementation of Official Language Policy; original Hindi Book-Writing in professional domain by the professionals concerned; and Hindi book-writing on subjects of Science and Technology, including scientific and technological subjects of contemporary interest.

The prizes under the category of Implementation of Official Language Policy are awarded to the Ministries/Departments of Govt. of India, Public Sectors Undertakings, Nationalised Banks & Financial Institutions, and Autonomous Bodies/Corporations/Boards. Till last year, the awards for the Ministries/ Departments were given to two sub-categories namely, those with staff strength of 300 and above, and those with strength of less than 300. This year, a new sub-category of ‘Scientific and Technical Ministries/Departments’ has been added to provide requisite motivation for wider use of Hindi in the field of Science and Technology. Awards for the PSUs and other categories are given on the basis of three linguistic regions. Besides, creative writing in Hindi is accorded recognition by awarding Indira Gandhi Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar, and Rajeev Gandhi Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak-Lekhan Puraskar.

The President, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil will be the Chief Guest on the ‘Hindi Day’ function tomorrow at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi being organized by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs. On this occasion, the President will be conferring 52 awards in various categories.
