Pranab Mukherjee becomes the new President of India

New Delhi, 22 July 2012: Pranab Mukherjee,  former finance minister and presidential candidate of the UPA won the presidential election to become the 13th President of India today. Pranab Mukherjee got 5.18 lakh votes with the support of UPA parties, SP, BSP, RJD, Shiv Sena, JD (U) etc. The opposition candidate PA Sangma secured a vote value of 1,45,848 only. Of the total votes, Pranab Mukherjee got 527 votes and PA Sangma got 206. Fifteen votes  were invalid.

The election was held on July 19. The new President will take oath on July 12, 2012
