Legendary singer KJ Yesudas celebrates golden jubilee in playback singing


Trivandrum, 15 November, 2011: Legendary singer KJ Yesudas has completed his 50 years as playback singer yesterday. Yesudas debuted as a playback singer on November 14, 1961 for the movie Kalpadukal with the song Jaathi Bhedam Matha Dwesham (music: M B Sreenivasan) .

Yesudas, now aged 71 has sung in almost all Indian languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tulu, etc.

He is the only singer to win the National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer seven times. He has also won the state awards for the best singer 30 times for Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu languages.

K. J. Yesudas was born in Fort Kochi, Kerala. His father was a renowned musician Augustine Joseph and mother Alicekutty.  He is married to Prabha and has three sons Vinod Yesudas, Vijay Yesudas and Vishal Yesudas, of which Vijay is a noted playback singer in south India.

UNESCO has presented Yesudas with an honorary award for "Outstanding Achievements in Music and Peace" at the "Music for Peace" event in Paris

 Ravindra Jain, the blind music director confessed that if he ever happened to regain vision, the first person he would like to see was Yesudas.
