Despite having a realistic approach, the film remains optimistic throughout and there is not a moment of despair. - Times of India

I Am Kalam is a film with straight-from-the-heart directness, with a boy as protagonist whose drive towards being a tie-wearing 'bada aadmi' gives this film a sense of purpose, ambition and hope. - Rediff Rating 3.5 stars

I Am Kalam shows how beautiful small can be, especially when the heart is in the right place and the mind is clued in. - NDTV Rating 4 stars

Inspirational and humorous in equal measure, 'I am Kalam' is the heartwarming story of a poor boy who aspires to learn; a young dreamer determined to rise above his humble roots and carve his own destiny. - IBN Rating 3.5 stars

This is no melodramatic, moralising pamphlet either. It's a sweet, intimate, fable-like film, even unnecessarily sanitised in parts, that touches upon issues of class, poverty, childhood, dreams, without ever quite losing sight of a reasonably plausible, engaging tale to tell. - Hindustan Times Review 3 stars
