A very convenient site if you want to check PNR status, Train between stations, Seat Availability Fare enquiry etc. Also train numbers and station codes can be easily searched. Registration is not required. But this site can be used only for planning or enquiry and not for booking.

Train running information website. It gives you all information regarding train departures, arrivals, timetable etc.

Railways Official Site for Ticket reservation. It is said to be India's busiest e-business site. You can book both E-tickets and I-Tickets (delivered via post) .Ticket cancellations and modifications can be done through this site .E-Ticket booking can also be done through mobile phone via GPRS or SMS. Registration is required and ticket reservation can be done only after user authentication.
