Somdev Devvarman 1st ever Indian gold medalist in Tennis singles at Asiad

India's Somdev Devvarman became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men's singles tennis event of the Asian Games. Somdev defeated top seed Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.

Somdev is ranked 106 and Denis is ranked 44 in the ATP rankings.

Somdev had earlier won gold medal in mens doubles with Sanam singh and bronze medal in mixed doubles.

Before Somdev, the Indian medals in individual tennis events were three bronzes secured by Leander paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Prahlad Srinath.
