Minister asked 15 crore bribe for starting an airline: Ratan Tata

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata has alleged that he had to abandon plans to launch airlines as he refused to pay bribes to minister. Ratan Tata told in a function at Dehradun that a bribe of Rs 15 crores was demanded from him from a Minister for setting up a domestic airline. Ratan Tata, however, did not name the Minister, nut he hinted that the incident occured 10-15 years ago.

Two ministers in charge of civil aviation in that time period were CM Ibrahim of the HD Deve Gowda-led-government and Shahnawaz Husain, of the BJP led NDA government.

The words of the Tatas is as follows:
Ratan Tata's met a fellow industrialist who apporached him and told "I don't understand. You people are very stupid, you know the minister wants 15 crores. Why don't you pay it?"

The Tata group has come up with a clarification that "No minister ever asked Tata for a bribe. The fellow industrialist expressed his personal view point that some minister was asking for a bribe"
