Mandela Day: UN declares July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day

The UN declared July 18th 2010, as its first ‘Nelson Mandela day.’ This is to honouring the father of South Africa on his 92nd birthday. The UN earlier in November 2009 passed a resolution for the purpose.

Mr. Mandela led the freedom struggle in South Africa as the head of the African National Congress. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison accusing sabotage and other serious crimes. He became the President of South Africa and won the first complete Democratic election in 1994.

The UN appreciates and acknowledges his leading role in Africa’s liberation, unity and the creation of a non-racial, non sexist and a democratic South Africa.
