'Kerala' may change its name to 'Keralam'

The Kerala government plans to rename 'Kerala' to 'Keralam', as it is called in the local language Malayalam.

Responding to a submission made by the ruling party (CPI-M) MLA Babu M Pallissery, the Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan told in the state Assembly that the government is looking into the matter to make the name of the state as Keralam.

He, however, said a decision on the matter would be taken only after evolving a consensus among people.

Earlier cities in Kerala has changed their anglicised names like " Trivandrum" to "Thiruvananthapuram", "Trichur" to "Thrissur" and "Calicut" to "Kozhikode. Changing the names of states and places from English to Indian languages is not a new thing in India, Bombay is now known as Mumbai, Calcutta as Kolkata, etc. Ironically Kerala is pronouced as "Keral" by a majority of North Indian people.
