Dhananjoy Chatterjee, Auto Shankar, Ajmal Kasab - Death Sentences in India

The special court which deals with the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack has awarded death sentence to Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab.

In this context, here is an overview of people who were awarded death penalty in India before.

In India capital punishment or death sentence is carried out by hanging until death. But in many recent cases it is found that the death sentence has been turned to life imprisonment upon appeal and mercy petitions.

Between 1975 and 1991, about 40 people were executed by hanging. The recent cases include the execution of Dhananjoy Chatterjee in 2004 and Auto Shankar in 1995.

About 29 mercy petitions are pending before the president which includ assassins of Rajiv Gandhi, Davinder Singh Bhullar, Veerappan's four associates, Gurdev Singh, Satnam Singh, Para Singh and Sarabjit Singh, Praveen Kumar etc.

Mohammad Afzal was convicted 2001 Indian Parliament attack and was sentenced to death, but is not yet executed.
