Daughter's Day India on July 1 Birthday of Kaplana Chawla

July 1 is celebrated as Daughter's Day in India. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Indian-born astronaut Kalpana Chawla. The celebration of daughters day was initiated by Public Relations Council of India (PRCI) during 2006.


Daughter's Day will be a time to remember the achievements of the girl child. Against all odds, women have overcome prejudices and other obstacles and reached glorious heights both at careers and as home makers.

Kalpana Chawla, born in Karnal, Haryana, India was an Indian-American astronaut and space shuttle mission specialist. She was one of seven crewmembers killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on February 1st, 2003.

Incidently Doctor's day is also celebrated on July 1st in India, in connection with the birthday of Dr. BC Roy.
